JR Pass and regional passes: is it worth it in 2026?

TL;DR
- Since the October 2023 price hike (¥29,650 → ¥50,000 for 7 days), the nationwide JR Pass loses money on most itineraries — a Tokyo–Kyoto round trip costs only about ¥28,000 in regular tickets.
- It pays off only if you cover serious distance in 7 days — think Tokyo → Hiroshima and Tokyo → Kanazawa round trips (≈ ¥68,000 in regular fares).
- Regional passes are the usual winners: Kansai Wide ¥12,000/5 days, Tokyo Wide ¥16,000/3 days, Kintetsu ¥4,900/5 days.
- Buying? Use the official online site — from October 1, 2026, travel-agency prices rise to ¥53,000 while the official channel stays at ¥50,000.

Children aged 6–11 pay half. Unlimited travel on JR trains nationwide, including most Shinkansen — but see the Nozomi note below.
The break-even math
Compare the 7-day pass (¥50,000) with what you’d actually spend on regular tickets. Representative one-way reserved-seat fares (approximate — confirm exact fares on the operators’ fare search before booking):

7-day nationwide JR Pass: ¥50,000
- Classic golden-route trip (Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, fly out of Kansai): ≈ ¥15,000–16,000 in long-distance tickets. Skip the pass — you save ¥34,000+.
- Tokyo–Kyoto round trip: ≈ ¥28,400. Skip the pass.
- Two big round trips in one week (say Tokyo–Hiroshima ≈ ¥38,800 + Tokyo–Kanazawa ≈ ¥28,800): ≈ ¥67,600 — now the pass wins by a wide margin.
Rule of thumb: the nationwide pass needs roughly ¥50,000 of long-distance travel inside 7 days. One city-to-city hop, however famous, never gets there.
The Nozomi/Mizuho surcharge
The pass covers Hikari and Kodama trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen, but the fastest Nozomi (and Mizuho on the Kyushu route) requires a flat supplement — ¥4,960 for Tokyo ⇄ Kyoto or Tokyo ⇄ Shin-Osaka, and the same for Shin-Osaka ⇄ Hakata. Buy it in Japan at a ticket office or machine before boarding; ride without it and you’ll be charged the full regular fare on the train. Hikari takes only about 15 minutes longer to Kyoto, so most pass holders simply skip Nozomi.

These are visitor-only passes (short-term stay status required). JR West also sells All Area and Kansai Area passes whose current prices vary by sales channel — check JR West’s pass page directly.
Buying and using a pass
- Buy on the official site (japanrailpass-reservation.net) with just a passport and credit card. Travel-agency exchange orders still exist, but from October 1, 2026 the agency price rises to ¥53,000 for 7 days while the official online price stays at ¥50,000.
- The passport-stamp trap: the pass requires a “Temporary Visitor” stamp in your passport. Automated immigration gates don’t stamp — use a staffed lane or ask an officer to stamp it when you land; otherwise you can’t pick up the pass.
- Seat reservations are free — book at ticket machines (scan the pass’s QR code) or any JR ticket office. The paper pass goes through automatic gates.
- Refunds are strict: before exchange/use, cancellation costs 10% of the price; once exchanged or started, no refund at all.
